Self-assessment is required for individuals who work for themselves. Each year, they must complete their self-assessment and submit their tax return to HMRC.
If you fall into any of the following categories, you may need to register for self-assessment:
• You are self-employed or a partner in a partnership.
• You are a company director.
• You have rental or property income.
• You have overseas income.
• You have received dividends from a company.
• You have savings or investment income.
• You have untaxed savings or investment income.
• Your household receives Child Benefit, and your income exceeds £50,000.
• You have lived or worked abroad or are not domiciled in the UK.
